History of Fort Worth

Fort Worth is the sixteenth largest city in the United States. It was established as a trading post by John Peter Smith in 1849, who named it after General William Jenkins Worth an American military figure from the Mexican-American War. The fort itself was named for Smith and today can be found on West Lancaster Avenue between I-35W and Riverside Drive. As of 2010 Fort Worth had a population of 780,960 people making it one of eleven cities with more than 750,000 residents (as per US Census Bureau).

It sits right next to Dallas, and has a total area of 257 square miles (669 km), making it one hundredth the size of Rhode Island or twice as large as Washington DC. The city itself was built on land that once belonged to native American tribes including Tonkawa, Lipan Apache, Comanche and others which were displaced by settlers in the mid-1800s.

The main reason why this site was chosen to establish trade comes down to three major factors: firstly its location along Native American ancient trails which allowed traders easy access; because there were already previous settlements in the area it was able to support a higher population, and finally its location on the confluence of rivers allowed traders and travelers to easily get around.
